As part of on-going site improvements and alterations at Lianhetech, there was a requirement to install a new boiler within the on-site boiler house. Projex Solutions were the mechanical, electrical and process engineers leading the project. They brought in JME Consultants to act as the structural engineers to advise on the suitability of the existing infrastructure to support the new boiler and to design any alterations which may be required. The new boiler was to be installed onto a reinforced concrete slab with a skid base, the chimney extending approximately 15m above the roof level was to be stabilised using tension cables. The concrete skid applied approximately 120 tonnes onto the slab below, this is approximately the same weight as The Flying Scotsman steam locomotive!
Core samples were needed to be taken through the existing concrete base to ascertain the structural build up. These were tested at a laboratory to confirm the strength of the concrete mixture and to advise on the reinforcement within. A 3D point cloud survey of the structure was undertaken, and a 3D design model produced off the back of this. A site survey to confirm the measurements of the structural items and ascertain the exact structural build up was also completed. Combining 3D and 2D analysis methods, JME Consultants were able to design and detail modest alterations to the structure to ensure it was suitable for the proposed alterations while also carefully assessing the concrete slab (which was found to be a suitable base!)
